Multi-Modal Data Fusion for Person Authentication using SVM

Abstract

In the context of multi-modal person authentication, a set of experts (face recognizer, speaker recognizer, etc. ) give their opinion about the identity of an individual. The opinions of the experts can be combined to form a final decision (rejecting or accepting the claim). We show that the final decision is a binary classification problem and propose to solve it by a Support Vector Machine (SVM). We compare our approach with other proposed methods for an identical verification task and show that it leads to considerably higher performance.

Biometrics

Biometrics are body measurements and calculations related to human characteristics. Biometric authentication (or realistic authentication) is used in computer science as a form of identification and access control. It is also used to identify individuals in groups that are under surveillance. Biometric identifiers are the distinctive, measurable characteristics used to label and describe individuals. In contrast with identification, the act of indicating a person or thing's identity, authentication is the process of verifying that identity. It might involve validating personal identity documents, verifying the authenticity of a website with a digital certificate, determining the age of an artifact by carbon dating, or ensuring that a product or document is not counterfeit.
