Glass has been the material of choice for making optical elements, in large part due to its intrinsic properties: a temperature-dependent viscosity, which enables shaping the material into a broad variety of functional and artistic glassware. Silica glass ...

Strong gravitational lenses provide unique laboratories for cosmological and astrophysical investigations, but they must first be discovered - a task that can be met with significant contamination by other astrophysical objects and asterisms. Here we revie ...

Supernovae (SNe) that have been multiply imaged by gravitational lensing are rare and powerful probes for cosmology. Each detection is an opportunity to develop the critical tools and methodologies needed as the sample of lensed SNe increases by orders of ...

We investigate the ability of human 'expert' classifiers to identify strong gravitational lens candidates in Dark Energy Survey like imaging. We recruited a total of 55 people that completed more than 25 per cent of the project. During the classification t ...

Modeling the mass distribution of galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses is a task of increasing difficulty. The high-resolution and depth of imaging data now available render simple analytical forms ineffective at capturing lens structures spanning a la ...

The largest source of systematic errors in the time-delay cosmography method likely arises from the lens model mass distribution, where an inaccurate choice of model could in principle bias the value of H-0. A Bayesian hierarchical framework has been propo ...

We spectroscopically detected 838 likely, 448 probable, and 265 possible strong lens candidates within approximate to 2million galaxy spectra contained within the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) from the sixteenth data release (DR1 ...

PURPOSE: To determine and compare the origin of the external surface reflections produced by commonly used intraocular lenses (IOLs). ...

A Koehler integrator device (10) comprises a collimating lens (11) being arranged for collimating a light field created by an incoherent or partially coherent light source, a pair of planar first and second micro-lens arrays (12, 13) being arranged for rel ...

Stereo reconstruction is a problem of recovering a 3d structure of a scene from a pair of images of the scene, acquired from different viewpoints. It has been investigated for decades and many successful methods were developed. The main drawback of these ...

Camera calibration refers to the modeling of the relationship between the coordinates of object points and their projections on the image plane. This is usually done by parametric models that describe the physical properties of the lens systems and camera ...

We present the results of 15 years of monitoring lensed quasars, which was conducted by the COSMOGRAIL programme at the Leonhard Euler 1.2 m Swiss Telescope. The decade-long light curves of 23 lensed systems are presented for the first time. We complement ...

Autofocus (AF) methods are extensively used in biomicroscopy, for example to acquire timelapses, where the imaged objects tend to drift out of focus. AF algorithms determine an optimal distance by which to move the sample back into the focal plane. Current ...

A system for photon correlation of an illuminated object and/or a light source, including a light source for illuminating the object or to correlate, an optical system having an object-facing side configured to face the object or the light source and a pro ...

In this study, we apply interferometric microscopy to study the phase, alongside the intensity, of the light field transmitted through a wide variety of samples. Additionally, we conduct those interferometric measurements at different wavelengths within th ...

In this work we study the evolution of the photonic nanojet (PNJ) phenomenon as the ratio of the sphere's diameter over the illumination wavelength changes, for microspheres with diameters from 2 mu m to 100 mu m. We measure the focal point position by usi ...

We present a sample of 12 quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) that potentially act as strong gravitational lenses on background emission line galaxies (ELG) or Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) selected through a systematic search of the 297 301 QSOs in the Sloan Digit ...

Strong gravitational lensing offers a wealth of astrophysical information on the background source it affects, provided the lensed source can be reconstructed as if it was seen in the absence of lensing. In the present work, we illustrate how sparse optimi ...

Knowledge of lens specifications is important to identify the best lens for a given capture scenario and application. Lens manufacturers provide many specifications in their data sheets, and multiple initiatives for testing and comparing different lenses c ...

Strong gravitational is a natural phenomenon that produces distorted images of distant galaxies due to massive galaxies or clusters, called deflectors or lenses, lying along the line of sight. Due to the mass of the deflector, and as a result of general re ...
