Measurement of the shape of the Lambda(0)(b) ->+ Lambda(+)(c) mu(-)(nu)over-bar mu differential decay rate

Abstract

A measurement of the shape of the differential decay rate and the associated Isgur-Wise function for the decay Lambda(0)(b) ->+ Lambda(+)(c) mu(-) is reported, using data corresponding to 3 fb(-1) collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions. The Lambda(+)(c) mu(-)(nu) over bar mu (+anything) final states are reconstructed through the detection of a muon and Lambda(+)(c) baryon decaying into pK(-)pi(+), and the decay Lambda(0)(b) -> Lambda(+)(c)pi(+)pi(-)mu(-)(nu) over bar mu are used to determine contributions from Lambda(0)(b) -> Lambda(c)*(+)mu(-)(nu) over bar mu decays. The measured dependence of the differential decay rate upon the squared four-momentum transfer between the heavy baryons, q(2), is compared with expectations from heavy-quark effective theory and from unquenched lattice QCD predictions.

Baryon

In particle physics, a baryon is a type of composite subatomic particle which contains an odd number of valence quarks (at least 3). Baryons belong to the hadron family of particles; hadrons are composed of quarks. Baryons are also classified as fermions because they have half-integer spin. The name "baryon", introduced by Abraham Pais, comes from the Greek word for "heavy" (βαρύς, barýs), because, at the time of their naming, most known elementary particles had lower masses than the baryons.

Lambda baryon

The lambda baryons (Λ) are a family of subatomic hadron particles containing one up quark, one down quark, and a third quark from a higher flavour generation, in a combination where the quantum wave function changes sign upon the flavour of any two quarks being swapped (thus slightly different from a neutral sigma baryon, _Sigma0). They are thus baryons, with total isospin of 0, and have either neutral electric charge or the elementary charge +1. The lambda baryon _Lambda0 was first discovered in October 1950, by V.

Xi baryon

The Xi baryons or cascade particles are a family of subatomic hadron particles which have the symbol Ξ and may have an electric charge (Q) of +2 e, +1 e, 0, or −1 e, where e is the elementary charge. Like all conventional baryons, Ξ particles contain three quarks. Ξ baryons, in particular, contain either one up or one down quark and two other, more massive quarks. The two more massive quarks are any two of strange, charm, or bottom (doubles allowed).
