Studies on single-molecule spectroscopy and nanoscale detection have been remarkably driven by an interest to reveal quantum and conformational states of single particles, the intra-molecular dynamics and their response to physical observables hidden by en ...

Metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) field-effect transistor (FET) scaling is following the prediction of the Moore's law for the past 45 years, a key factor that enabled the IC industry to cope with the everlasting demand for higher performances. However, this ...

The outstanding progress in nanostructure fabrication and cooling technologies allows what was unthinkable a few decades ago: bringing single-mode mechanical vibrations to the quantum regime. The coupling between photon and phonon excitations is a natural ...

In this paper, we review recent advances in optical microinstruments based on distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) focusing mainly on two application areas: spectrometry and profilometry. For spectrometry applications, we consider state-of-the-art architectu ...

This paper analyzes some advantages of Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) based photodetectors for bioluminescence imaging. It shows that SOI based sensors not only solve the bulk carriers problem, it can also act as a very selective spectral filter by acting as a ...

Currently, crystalline silicon (c-Si) wafer-based solar cells dominate the photovoltaic market (80-90%). In this thesis we concentrate on silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells that--in contrast to diffused homojunction cells--rely on the application of ...

Field-effect transistors (FETs) form an established technology for sensing applications. However, recent advancements and use of high-performance multigate metal-oxide semiconductor FETs (double-gate, FinFET, trigate, gate-all-around) in computing technolo ...

Near-infrared (NIR) light sensitive lanthanide-doped NaYF4 upconversion particles (UCPs) are gaining increasing attention as local probes in biomedical applications. Here, we implemented a photonic force microscope (PFM) to manipulate and study the optical ...

A 3D vertically stacked silicon nanowire (SiNW) field effect transistor featuring a high density array of fully depleted channels gated by a backgate and one or two symmetrical platinum side-gates through a liquid has been electrically characterized for th ...

We demonstrate a resonant optical trapping mechanism based on two-dimensional hollow photonic crystal cavities. This approach benefits simultaneously from the resonant nature and unprecedented field overlap with the trapped specimen. The photonic crystal s ...

We fabricate and experimentally characterize an H0 photonic crystal slab nanocavity with a design optimized for maximal quality factor, Q = 1.7 x 10(6). The cavity, fabricated from a silicon slab, has a resonant mode at lambda = 1.59 mu m and a measured Q- ...
