Search for a CP asymmetry in Cabibbo-suppressed D0 decays

Abstract

We measure the CP-violating asymmetries in decays to the D0 → K+ K- and D0 → π+ π- CP eigenstates using 540 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at or near the Υ{hooked} (4 S) resonance. Cabibbo-favored D0 → K- π+ decays are used to correct for systematic detector effects. The results, ACP K K = (- 0.43 ± 0.30 ± 0.11) % and ACP π π = (+ 0.43 ± 0.52 ± 0.12) %, are consistent with no CP violation. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In particle physics, CP violation is a violation of CP-symmetry (or charge conjugation parity symmetry): the combination of C-symmetry (charge symmetry) and P-symmetry (parity symmetry). CP-symmetry states that the laws of physics should be the same if a particle is interchanged with its antiparticle (C-symmetry) while its spatial coordinates are inverted ("mirror" or P-symmetry). One of the outstanding problems in modern physics is the predominance of matter over antimatter in the universe. The universe, as a whole, seems to have a nonzero positive baryon number density.
