We study the effects of parasitic lane-free flows on a predominantly lane-based urban system. Our nonequilibrium model offers an explanation for the large scatter found in experimental measurements by taking into account the nonlinear, stochastic perturbations present in multispecies traffic configurations. We also show that under certain traffic conditions, separation of flows occurs.
