Infinitesimal thickenings of Morava K-theories

Abstract

A. Baker has constructed certain sequences of cohomology theories which interpolate between the Johnson-Wilson and the Morava K-theories. We realize the representing sequences of spectra as sequences of MU-algebras. Starting with the fact that the spectra representing the Johnson-Wilson and the Morava K-theories admit such structures, we construct the sequences by inductively forming singular extensions. Our methods apply to other pairs of MU-algebras as well. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Cohomology

In mathematics, specifically in homology theory and algebraic topology, cohomology is a general term for a sequence of abelian groups, usually one associated with a topological space, often defined from a cochain complex. Cohomology can be viewed as a method of assigning richer algebraic invariants to a space than homology. Some versions of cohomology arise by dualizing the construction of homology. In other words, cochains are functions on the group of chains in homology theory.

Crystalline cohomology

In mathematics, crystalline cohomology is a Weil cohomology theory for schemes X over a base field k. Its values Hn(X/W) are modules over the ring W of Witt vectors over k. It was introduced by and developed by . Crystalline cohomology is partly inspired by the p-adic proof in of part of the Weil conjectures and is closely related to the algebraic version of de Rham cohomology that was introduced by Grothendieck (1963).

Étale cohomology

In mathematics, the étale cohomology groups of an algebraic variety or scheme are algebraic analogues of the usual cohomology groups with finite coefficients of a topological space, introduced by Grothendieck in order to prove the Weil conjectures. Étale cohomology theory can be used to construct l-adic cohomology, which is an example of a Weil cohomology theory in algebraic geometry. This has many applications, such as the proof of the Weil conjectures and the construction of representations of finite groups of Lie type.
