Abstract

A photog. material with improved physicomech. properties and photog. characteristics contains a combination of gelatin and a water-sol. polymer in the form of a symplex. Thus, a cellulose acetate support was coated with a coupler-contg. Ag(Br,Cl,I) (15 mol% AgCl) emulsion layer contg. gelatin and a polyelectrolyte complex composed of cellulose sulfate and an acrylamide-acrylic acid copolymer cationic ester to give a material which showed a swelling value of 290% and a m.p. of 74 Deg vs. 720% and 31 Deg, resp., for a control contg. only gelatin. Photographic processing

Photographic processing or photographic development is the chemical means by which photographic film or paper is treated after photographic exposure to produce a negative or positive . Photographic processing transforms the into a visible image, makes this permanent and renders it insensitive to light. All processes based upon the gelatin silver process are similar, regardless of the film or paper's manufacturer. Exceptional variations include instant films such as those made by Polaroid and thermally developed films.

Photographic film

Photographic film is a strip or sheet of transparent film base coated on one side with a gelatin emulsion containing microscopically small light-sensitive silver halide crystals. The sizes and other characteristics of the crystals determine the sensitivity, contrast, and of the film. The emulsion will gradually darken if left exposed to light, but the process is too slow and incomplete to be of any practical use. Instead, a very short exposure to the image formed by a camera lens is used to produce only a very slight chemical change, proportional to the amount of light absorbed by each crystal.

Cellulose acetate

In biochemistry, cellulose acetate refers to any acetate ester of cellulose, usually cellulose diacetate. It was first prepared in 1865. A bioplastic, cellulose acetate is used as a film base in photography, as a component in some coatings, and as a frame material for eyeglasses; it is also used as a synthetic fiber in the manufacture of cigarette filters and playing cards. In photographic film, cellulose acetate film replaced nitrate film in the 1950s, being far less flammable and cheaper to produce.
