Abstract

Return-stroke lightning models and coupling models permit a fairly good estimation of overvoltages induced by indirect lightning strokes. However, some discrepancies that still exist between measured data and calculations stress the necessity to incorporate leader effects into the models, to improve our understanding of ground conductivity effects on the formation of the fields, and to obtain more experimental data

Lightning

Lightning is a natural phenomenon formed by electrostatic discharges through the atmosphere between two electrically charged regions, either both in the atmosphere or with one in the atmosphere and on the ground, temporarily neutralizing these in a near-instantaneous release of an average of one gigajoule of energy. Lightning rods are also called finials, air terminals, or strike termination devices. In a lightning protection system, a lightning rod is a single component of the system.
