Abstract

A review with 111 refs. presenting exptl. aspects of metal-cluster work including: supersonic- mol.- beam technol.; laser spectroscopy; mass spectroscopy; and low- and high-temp. matrix-isolation expts. The exptl. results discussed include: stability of cluster sizes; selectivity of the heterometallic bond; elec. and magnetic properties from the atom to the bulk; insulator-metal transitions; and size-dependent chem. and catalytic properties. Quantum chem. and ab initio mol. dynamics models are discussed. [on SciFinder (R)]

Magnetism

Magnetism is the class of physical attributes that occur through a magnetic field, which allows objects to attract or repel each other. Because both electric currents and magnetic moments of elementary particles give rise to a magnetic field, magnetism is one of two aspects of electromagnetism. The most familiar effects occur in ferromagnetic materials, which are strongly attracted by magnetic fields and can be magnetized to become permanent magnets, producing magnetic fields themselves.

Magnetic dipole

In electromagnetism, a magnetic dipole is the limit of either a closed loop of electric current or a pair of poles as the size of the source is reduced to zero while keeping the magnetic moment constant. It is a magnetic analogue of the electric dipole, but the analogy is not perfect. In particular, a true magnetic monopole, the magnetic analogue of an electric charge, has never been observed in nature. However, magnetic monopole quasiparticles have been observed as emergent properties of certain condensed matter systems.

Nanocluster

Nanoclusters are atomically precise, crystalline materials most often existing on the 0-2 nanometer scale. They are often considered kinetically stable intermediates that form during the synthesis of comparatively larger materials such as semiconductor and metallic nanocrystals. The majority of research conducted to study nanoclusters has focused on characterizing their crystal structures and understanding their role in the nucleation and growth mechanisms of larger materials.
