Abstract

The reasons for the lower piezoelectric properties in the most studied lead-free piezoelectrics, modified (K,Na)NbO3 and (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3, are discussed. Contributions from domain wall motion and properties at the morphotropic phase boundary are considered and are compared to those in PZT. Lead-free, non-piezoelectric solutions to electromechanical coupling are discussed.

Ferroelectricity

Ferroelectricity is a characteristic of certain materials that have a spontaneous electric polarization that can be reversed by the application of an external electric field. All ferroelectrics are also piezoelectric and pyroelectric, with the additional property that their natural electrical polarization is reversible. It is used in a number of practical applications such as ultrasonic transducers and piezoelectric resonators. It is a white to off-white solid. Lead zirconium titanate was first developed around 1952 at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
