The present article reviews basic techniques widely used for fundamental research, as well as in the plastics and composites industries, for the characterization of polymer-based materials destined for bulk applications, such as packaging, construction, transport, consumer electronics, and household appliances. As a result, the focus is on processing and mechanical performance, so that particular attention is given to rheological and mechanical test methods, and the determination of the physical and morphological characteristics upon which these depend.
