Abstract

Sophisticated techniques have been recently developed to achieve centimetric spatial resolution in distributed Brillouin fibre sensing, by-passing the slow response of this optoacoustic interaction by creating a localized stationary material vibration. More than 1'000'000 resolved points are demonstrated (1 cm resolution over 10 km).

Photonic crystal

A photonic crystal is an optical nanostructure in which the refractive index changes periodically. This affects the propagation of light in the same way that the structure of natural crystals gives rise to X-ray diffraction and that the atomic lattices (crystal structure) of semiconductors affect their conductivity of electrons.
