Poster presented at the International and Interdisciplinary Conference "A Future for whose Past? The Heritage of Minorities, Fringe Groups and People Without a Lobby" at Monte Verità, CH, 21-24.10.2025
The current poster, entitled “A Future for Traditional Craftsmanship: Lessons and Challenges from the Development of a Cross-Mediterranean Pilot Programme” is part of The Urban Heritage and Traditional Building Skills in the Southern Mediterranean Region programme that was launched by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and UNESCO in July 2023. This initiative aimed to address critical challenges relating to the preservation of traditional construction techniques and vernacular architecture in the Maghreb region. The programme’s goals included safeguarding cultural heritage, supporting sustainable local economies, and creating skilled employment, particularly in the crafts associated with traditional building materials and techniques. At the final meeting in Córdoba, held in June 2024, one of the key outcomes was the decision to support the Maghreb countries in defining and establishing professional, certified vocational training programmes in heritage building crafts. To inform this process, it was agreed that lessons should be drawn from successful European training models. Consequently, two site visits were planned as part of this initiative: one in Marseille (November 2024) and another in Berlin (May 2025). The poster provides a brief presentation of the discussed methodological framework and its outcomes for each participating country in relation to vocational training, as well as the future directions that the programme may take in its next stages. Each stage was accompanied by the scientific and technical assistance of Boulouki – Itinerant Workshop on Traditional Building Techniques.
