Our HERUS Jour Fixe seminars provide a dedicated platform for our team to exchange insights on research progress, ongoing projects, and other relevant topics. These sessions foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the group, welcoming guest speakers who present their work, sparking discussions and potential synergies for future projects.
In this seminar, Anna Christy, researcher at Newcastle University, presented about the untapped carbon potential of the water sector in mitigating climate change. This research delves into identifying climate mitigation actions within the water sector by scrutinizing its carbon accounting methodology, known as the Carbon Accounting Workbook. The study aims to pinpoint emission hotspots, particularly focusing on the accuracy of Scope 1 emissions calculation and opportunities for enhancement. Through an examination of capital and operational emissions across various asset classes within the water and wastewater sector, the research highlights disparities between existing practices and optimal carbon accounting standards.
