The propagation constant is one of the most important parameters for the calculation of a shielded cable response to an incident EMP wave. The aim of this work is to propose an iterative calculation method of the propagation constant of cables with an arbitrary number of layers buried in an infinite earth. Comparison of the results with calculations for single layer shielded cables using Sunde's formulae and curves published by Head show a very good agreement. It is also shown that the use of Sunde's approximative expressions, where possible, results in an important economy of computing time.
