Abstract

The second international workshop on “AI + Astronomy: Models, Data, Discovery”, held in Lausanne from 31 March to 1 April 2026 convened more than 50 scholars from the EPFL Laboratory of Astrophysics (Versoix, Switzerland) and Zhejiang Lab (Hangzhou, China). The event focused on the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on data-intensive astronomical research and provided a platform to address the complexities arising from its use.

Big data

Big data primarily refers to data sets that are too large or complex to be dealt with by traditional data-processing application software. Data with many entries (rows) offer greater statistical power, while data with higher complexity (more attributes or columns) may lead to a higher false discovery rate. AI applications include advanced web search engines (e.g., Google Search), recommendation systems (used by YouTube, Amazon, and Netflix), understanding human speech (such as Siri and Alexa), self-driving cars (e.g., Waymo), generative or creative tools (ChatGPT and AI art), and competing at the highest level in strategic games (such as chess and Go).
