Abstract

A brief review with 18 refs. is provided of the principal research and development activities of the Lab. of Polyelectrolytes and BioMacromols. at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technol. These include, in particular, the synthesis of tailor-made polyelectrolytes, the development of novel materials based on polyelectrolytes as well as basic research in the field of process technologies for synthesis and structure formation. Polyelectrolyte

Polyelectrolytes are polymers whose repeating units bear an electrolyte group. Polycations and polyanions are polyelectrolytes. Polyelectrolyte properties are thus similar to both electrolytes (salts) and polymers (high molecular weight compounds) and are sometimes called polysalts. Like salts, their solutions are electrically conductive. Like polymers, their solutions are often viscous.

Materials science

Materials science is an interdisciplinary field of researching and discovering materials. Materials engineering is an engineering field of finding uses for materials in other fields and industries. The intellectual origins of materials science stem from the Age of Enlightenment, when researchers began to use analytical thinking from chemistry, physics, and engineering to understand ancient, phenomenological observations in metallurgy and mineralogy. Materials science still incorporates elements of physics, chemistry, and engineering.
