Abstract

Magnetically-levitated drives are interesting in applications which demand a combination of reliable operation and high speeds. In the latter domain, slotless stators are recognized as the most suitable, as they deliver higher power density and lower speed-dependent losses. Nevertheless, the larger airgaps proper to slotless topologies minder bearing load capacities.

Power density

Power density is the amount of power (time rate of energy transfer) per unit volume. In energy transformers including batteries, fuel cells, motors, power supply units etc., power density refers to a volume, where it is often called volume power density, expressed as W/m3. Magnetic bearings support the highest speeds of any kind of bearing and have no maximum relative speed. Active bearings have several advantages: they do not suffer from wear, have low friction, and can often accommodate irregularities in the mass distribution automatically, allowing rotors to spin around their center of mass with very low vibration.
