The electrification of the transport sector is a key element in decarbonizing our societies. However, energy systems will have to cope with additional electricity demand due to the charging needs of electric vehicles (EVs) together with the integration of ...

Excitons play an essential role in the optical response of two-dimensional materials. These are bound states showing up in the band gaps of many-body systems and are conceived as quasiparticles formed by an electron and a hole. By performing real-time simu ...

In this study, we develop and experimentally validate the integration of a localized metallic back-gate into a multi-gate silicon-on-insulator (SOI) field-effect transistor (FET), aimed at enabling front-gate coupling efficiency from room to cryogenic (mK) ...

In semiconductors, exciton or charge carrier diffusivity is typically described as an inherent material property. Here, we show that the transport of excitons among CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) depends markedly on how recently those NCs were occup ...

Charge separation processes in organic semiconductors play a pivotal role in diverse applications ranging from photovoltaics to photocatalysis. Understanding these mechanisms, particularly the role of hybrid charge-transfer (CT) states, is essential for ad ...

Over the past decade, quantum photonics platforms aiming at harnessing the fundamental properties of single particles, such as quantum superposition and quantum entanglement, have flourished. In this context, single-photon emitters capable of operating at ...

Microcavity polaritons are strongly interacting hybrid light-matter quasiparticles, which are promising for the development of novel light sources and active photonic devices. Here, we report polariton lasing in the UV spectral range in microring resonator ...

Semiconductor nanocrystals feature multiply-excited states that display intriguing physics and significantly impact nanocrystal-based technologies. Fluorescence supplies a natural probe to investigate these states. Still, direct observation of multiexciton ...

Tip-enhanced optical effects have enabled a wide palette of nanoscale investigation techniques and recently they were successfully used to modify and manipulate matter with nanoscale spatial resolution. We contribute to this latter area by reporting a viab ...

Nonradiative recombination in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells has long been attributed to the antisite defects MCu (M = In, Ga), but the underlying mechanism is still elusive. Using rigorous first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the antisites ...

The discovery of twisted bilayer graphene with tunable superconductivity has diverted great focus at the world of twisted van der Waals heterostructures. Here we propose a paradigm for bilayer materials, where covalent bonding replaces the van der Waals in ...

Objective. Microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) is an alternative emerging radiotherapy treatment modality which has demonstrated effective radioresistant tumour control while sparing surrounding healthy tissue in preclinical trials. This apparent selectivity ...

Excitons, Coulomb-bound electron-hole pairs, are the fundamental excitations governing the optoelectronic properties of semiconductors. Although optical signatures of excitons have been studied extensively, experimental access to the excitonic wave functio ...

c-plane GaN/AlN quantum dots (QDs) are promising zero-dimensional quantum nanostructures that exhibit single photon emission properties up to room temperature and even above. In this context, it is of prime interest to gain a deeper insight into the recomb ...

A polariton is a quasiparticle formed from the coupling of a confined photon in a cavity to electronic excitation, like exciton in a semiconductor. This dissertation reports on series of experiments in confined polariton interaction by design, fabrication, ...

Supramolecular assemblies from organic dyes forming J-aggregates are known to exhibit narrowband photoluminescence with full-width at half maximum of approximate to 9 nm (260 cm(-1)). Applications of these high color purity emitters, however, are hampered ...

Over the past decade, lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have received considerable attention thanks to their impressive optoelectronic properties. Today, LHP-based devices are one of the most efficient single-junction solar cells, with power-conversion effici ...

The quasiparticle spectra of atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and their response to an ultrafast optical excitation critically depend on interactions with the underlying substrate. Here, we present a comparative time- ...

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are atomically thin crystals with exceptional mechanical, electrical and optical properties. Their unique characteristics originating from quantum confinement in the vertical dimension have attracted a strong interest for sci ...
