Measurement of the branching fractions of the decays B-s(0) -> (D)over-bar(0)K(-) pi(+) and B-0 -> (D)over-bar(0)K(+) pi(-)

Abstract

The first observation of the decay B-s(0) -> (D) over bar K-0(-) pi(+) is reported. The analysis is based on a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1) of pp collisions, collected with the LHCb detector. The branching fraction relative to that of the topologically similar decay B-0 -> (D) over bar (0)pi(+)pi(-) is measured to be B(B-0 ->(D) over bar K-0(+)pi(-))/B(B-0 ->(D) over bar (0)pi(+)pi(-)) 1.18 +/- 0.05(stat) +/- 0.12(syst). In addition, the relative branching fraction of the decay B-0 -> (D) over bar K-0(+)pi(-) is measured to be B(B-0 ->(D) over bar K-0(+)pi(-))/B(B-0 ->(D) over bar (0)pi(+)pi(-)) = 0.106 +/-(stat) +/- 0.008(syst).

B meson

In particle physics, B mesons are mesons composed of a bottom antiquark and either an up (_B+), down (_B0), strange (_Strange B0) or charm quark (_Charmed B+). The combination of a bottom antiquark and a top quark is not thought to be possible because of the top quark's short lifetime. The combination of a bottom antiquark and a bottom quark is not a B meson, but rather bottomonium, which is something else entirely. Each B meson has an antiparticle that is composed of a bottom quark and an up (_B-), down (_AntiB0), strange (_Strange antiB0) or charm (_Charmed b-) antiquark respectively.

In nuclear physics, beta decay (β-decay) is a type of radioactive decay in which an atomic nucleus emits a beta particle (fast energetic electron or positron), transforming into an isobar of that nuclide. For example, beta decay of a neutron transforms it into a proton by the emission of an electron accompanied by an antineutrino; or, conversely a proton is converted into a neutron by the emission of a positron with a neutrino in so-called positron emission.

Radioactive decay (also known as nuclear decay, radioactivity, radioactive disintegration, or nuclear disintegration) is the process by which an unstable atomic nucleus loses energy by radiation. A material containing unstable nuclei is considered radioactive. Three of the most common types of decay are alpha, beta, and gamma decay, all of which involve emitting particles. The weak force is the mechanism that is responsible for beta decay, while the other two are governed by the electromagnetism and nuclear force.
