Abstract

An implantable blood pressure monitor has two or more elements configured to wrap at least part way around a blood vessel. Changes in pressure within the blood vessel may be sensed by detecting movements of the elements or forces applied to the elements. A blood pressure monitor may be implanted without surgery. The blood pressure monitor may transmit real time blood pressure information to a receiver by wireless data transmission.

Blood pressure

Blood pressure (BP) is the pressure of circulating blood against the walls of blood vessels. Most of this pressure results from the heart pumping blood through the circulatory system. When used without qualification, the term "blood pressure" refers to the pressure in a brachial artery, where it is most commonly measured. Manual sphygmomanometers are used with a stethoscope when using the auscultatory technique. A sphygmomanometer consists of an inflatable cuff, a measuring unit (the mercury manometer, or aneroid gauge), and a mechanism for inflation which may be a manually operated bulb and valve or a pump operated electrically.
