Type inference in the presence of first-class or "impredicative" second-order polymorphism a la System F has been an active research area for several decades, with original works dating back to the end of the 80s. Yet, until now many basic problems remain ...

Type systems are a device for verifying properties of programs without running them. Many programming languages used in the industry have always had a type system, while others were initially created without a type system and later adopted one, when the ad ...

Modern computing systems are so energy- intensive to make efficient cooling vital for their operation. This is giving rise to a variety of innovative cooling solutions based on a mix of traditional and new techniques. The design and engineering of these so ...

While software applications, programming languages, and hardware have changed, operating systems have not. Widely-used commodity operating systems are still modeled after the ones designed in the seventies. The accumulated burden of backward compatibility ...

Agent-based simulations have been widely applied in many disciplines, by scientists and engineers alike. Scientists use agent-based simulations to tackle global problems, including alleviating poverty, reducing violence, and predicting the impact of pandem ...

Many programming languages in the OO tradition now support pattern matching in some form. Historical examples include Scala and Ceylon, with the more recent additions of Java, Kotlin, TypeScript, and Flow. But pattern matching on generic class hierarchies ...

Type-level programming is becoming more and more popular in the realm of functional programming. However, the combination of type-level programming and subtyping remains largely unexplored in practical programming languages. This paper presents match types ...

Over the past decade, the Scala community has shown great interest in using type-level programming to obtain additional type safety. Unfortunately, the lack of support from the Scala compiler has been a barrier to the adoption of that technique, notably du ...

The analysis of nuclear reactors for performance and safety assessment benefits from the use of computational tools. In this context, this work aims at the development and application of a thermal-hydraulics methodology and related software that respond to ...

In this article, I discuss the process of designing an object to protest against a specific surveillance device: the IMSI catcher, a controversial object used to monitor GSM networks. Being widely used in protests, I develop a tactical approach based on ob ...

Information about a moving object is usually poor at each retinotopic location because photoreceptor activation is short, noisy, and affected by shadows, reflections of other objects, and so on. Integration across the motion trajectory may yield a much bet ...

Software engineering practices have been steadily moving towards higher-level programming languages and away from lower-level ones. High-level languages tend to greatly improve safety, productivity, and code maintainability because they handle various impl ...

Scala has been developed as a language that deeply integrates with the Java ecosystem. It offers seamless interoperability with existing Java libraries. Since the Scala compiler targets Java bytecode, Scala programs have access to high-performance runtimes ...

The inception of object-oriented programming introduces a category of bugs related to object construction: initialization errors. Every newly created object goes through several initialization states: starting from a state where all fields are uninitialize ...

Every newly created object goes through several initialization states: starting from a state where all fields are uninitialized until all of them are assigned. Any operation on the object during its initialization process, which usually happens in the cons ...

In this thesis, we present Stainless, a verification system for an expressive subset of the Scala language. Our system is based on a dependently-typed language and an algorithmic type checking procedure which ensures total correctness. We rely on SMT solve ...

Many different data analytics tasks boil down to linear algebra primitives. In practice, for each different type of workload, data scientists use a particular specialised library. In this paper, we present Pilatus, a polymorphic iterative linear algebra la ...

Object-oriented modeling is concerned with capturing common properties of objects. The dominant thinking in this realm is to classify objects that share certain properties into what is called a class, which in turn enables us to instantiate additional obje ...

Generalized algebraic data types (GADT) have been notoriously difficult to implement correctly in Scala. Both major Scala compilers, Scalac and Dotty, are currently known to have type soundness holes related to them. In particular, covariant GADTs have exp ...
