Exponential Kleisli Monoids as Eilenberg-Moore Algebras

Abstract

Lax monoidal powerset-enriched monads yield a monoidal structure on the category of monoids in the Kleisli category of a monad. Exponentiable objects in this category are identified as those Kleisli monoids with algebraic structure. This result generalizes the classical identification of exponentiable topological spaces as those whose lattice of open subsets forms a continuous lattice.

Algebraic structure

In mathematics, an algebraic structure consists of a nonempty set A (called the underlying set, carrier set or domain), a collection of operations on A (typically binary operations such as addition and multiplication), and a finite set of identities, known as axioms, that these operations must satisfy. An algebraic structure may be based on other algebraic structures with operations and axioms involving several structures.

Monoidal category

In mathematics, a monoidal category (or tensor category) is a equipped with a bifunctor that is associative up to a natural isomorphism, and an I that is both a left and right identity for ⊗, again up to a natural isomorphism. In mathematics, an open set is a generalization of an open interval in the real line. In a metric space (a set along with a distance defined between any two points), an open set is a set that, along with every point P, contains all points that are sufficiently near to P (that is, all points whose distance to P is less than some value depending on P). More generally, an open set is a member of a given collection of subsets of a given set, a collection that has the property of containing every union of its members, every finite intersection of its members, the empty set, and the whole set itself.
