Background: Static posterior subluxation of the humeral head (SPSH) results in glenohumeral osteoarthritis. Treatment strategies for SPSH with or without resulting osteoarthritis remain challenging. There is growing interest in evaluating the rotator cuff ...

Deep learning models (DLM) are efficient replacements for computationally intensive optimization techniques. Musculoskeletal models (MSM) typically involve resource-intensive optimization processes for determining joint and muscle forces. Consequently, DLM ...

In this paper, we propose a reduced-order modeling strategy for two-way Dirichlet-Neumann parametric coupled problems solved with domain-decomposition (DD) sub-structuring methods. We split the original coupled differential problem into two sub-problems wi ...

Upper-limb occupational exoskeletons to support the workers' upper arms are typically designed to provide antigravitational support. Although typical work activities require workers to perform static and dynamic actions, the majority of the studies in lite ...

BackgroundOpen reduction and plate osteosynthesis are considered as a successful technique for the treatment of proximal humerus fracture (PHF) despite high complication rates. The objective of our study was to review the clinical outcome and complications ...

We propose an image-based elastography method to measure the heterogeneous stiffness inside a cell and its nucleus. It uses a widely accessible setup consisting of plate compression imaged with fluorescence microscopy. Our framework recovers a spatial map ...

Total Flow Analysis (TFA) is a method for the worst-case analysis of time-sensitive networks. It uses service curve characterizations of the network nodes and arrival curves of flows at their sources; for tractability, the latter are often taken to be line ...

Objective. Powered lower-limb prostheses relying on decoding motor intentions from non-invasive sensors, like electromyographic (EMG) signals, can significantly improve the quality of life of amputee subjects. However, the optimal combination of high decod ...

Experiments on the lower limbs are the only approaches being used to study how hypogravity (HG) (0 < g < 1, e.g., Moon: 1/6 g, Mars: 3/8 g) affects human movement. The goal of this study was to expand this field experimentally by investigating the effect o ...

The accurate, robust and efficient transfer of the deformation gradient tensor between meshes of different resolution is crucial in cardiac electromechanics simulations. This paper presents a novel method that combines rescaled localized Radial Basis Funct ...

Posterior eccentric glenoid wear is associated with higher complication rates after shoulder arthroplasty. The recently reported association between the acromion shape and glenoid retroversion in both normal and osteoarthritic shoulders remains controversi ...

The objective of this study was to determine the normative bone mineral density (BMD) of cortical and trabecular bone regions in the adult glenoid and its dependence on the subject's age and sex. We analyzed computed tomography (CT) scans of 441 shoulders ...

The lattice Green's function method (LGFM) is the discrete counterpart of the continuum boundary element method and is a natural approach for solving intrinsically discrete solid mechanics problems that arise in atomistic-continuum coupling methods. Here, ...

Electroadhesion is a versatile and controllable adhesion mechanism that has been used extensively in robotics. Soft electroadhesion embodies electrostatic adhesion in soft materials and is required for shape-adaptive and safe grasping of curved objects and ...

We introduce a local adaptive discontinuous Galerkin method for convection-diffusion-reaction equations. The proposed method is based on a coarse grid and iteratively improves the solution's accuracy by solving local elliptic problems in refined subdomains ...

Previous research has suggested that bodily signals from internal organs are associated with diverse cortical and subcortical processes involved in sensory-motor functions, beyond homeostatic reflexes. For instance, a recent study demonstrated that the pre ...

The Internodes method is a general purpose method to deal with non-conforming discretizations of partial differential equations on 2D and 3D regions partitioned into disjoint subdomains. In this paper we are interested in measuring how much the Internodes ...

Glenohumeral osteoarthritis is a degenerative shoulder joint disease, which causes the breakdown of articular cartilage and bone. People affected by this disease suffer from severe pain and eventually reduced mobility and poor life quality. This disease is ...

The introduction of modular design in total hip arthroplasty has enabled the use of different materials in one single configuration and the adjustment of the prosthesis to the patient's body, and facilitated medical revisions. However, modularity leads to ...

We present a novel isogeometric method, namely the Immersed Boundary-Conformal Method (IBCM), that features a layer of discretization conformal to the boundary while employing a simple background mesh for the remaining domain. In this manner, we leverage t ...
