Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and/or photodetection (PDD) based on protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) are used in many medical fields. However, the endogenous production of PpIX in tissues after administration of its precursor, 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) or derivative ...

Recent state-of-the-art methods for skin lesion segmentation are based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Even though these CNN-based segmentation approaches are accurate, they are computationally expensive. In this paper, we address this problem and ...

Background The estimation of relative distance is a perceptual task used extensively in everyday life. This important skill suffers from biases that may be more pronounced when estimation is based on haptics. This is especially true for the blind and visua ...

Sparse superposition codes, or sparse regression codes, constitute a new class of codes, which was first introduced for communication over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. It has been shown that such codes are capacity-achieving over the A ...

A primary aim of RILEM TC 267-TRM: Tests for Reactivity of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) is to compare and evaluate the performance of conventional and novel SCM reactivity test methods across a wide range of SCMs. To this purpose, a round ro ...

Feature detection and description constitute important steps of many computer vision applications such as object detection and panorama stitching. Since those steps are computationally heavy, they might occupy significant portion of the full operation. Alt ...

A 1D photonic crystal structure sustaining optical surface waves is investigated. The propagation length of the surface mode is studied both using an eigenmode model and a rigorous time domain solver. The two models show good convergence. Our results demon ...

An accurate calibration of the JET neutron diagnostics with a 14 MeV neutron generator was performed in the first half of 2017 in order to provide a reliable measurement of the fusion power during the next JET deuterium-tritium (DT) campaign. In order to m ...

Two-phase, refrigerant-based cooling offers significant promise for increasing heat densities and energy efficiencies of electronic components. One barrier to wide spread adoption of two-phase cooling solutions is preserving product features deemed essenti ...

Cyril Veillon, directeur d'Archizoom, la plateforme d’échanges sur l’architecture de l'École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, revient sur la victoire romande au Solar Decathlon. ...

The Swiss Nano-Tera.ch program addresses – among others – issues at the intersection of engineering and medical domains. Specifically, electronic-health (or E-Health) is a broad area of engineering that leverages transducer, circuit and systems technologie ...
