Search for the charmonium weak decay $ J/\psi \to {\overline{D}}^0{\overline{K}}^{\ast 0}+\textrm{c}.\textrm{c}. $

Abstract

Based on a sample of (10087 ± 44) × 10 6 J / ψ events collected at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=3.0969$ GeV with the BESIII detector, we search for the charmonium rare weak decay $J/\psi \to {\overline{D}}^0{\overline{K}}^{\ast 0}+\textrm{c}.\textrm{c}.$ . No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit on its decay branching fraction at the 90% confidence level is set as 1.4 × 10 − 7 , improving the sensitivity of the previous best limit by an order of magnitude.

Charm quark

The charm quark, charmed quark, or c quark is an elementary particle of the second generation. It is the third-most massive quark, with a mass of 1.27GeV/c2 (as measured in 2022) and a charge of +2/3 e. It carries charm, a quantum number. Charm quarks are found in various hadrons, such as the J/psi meson and the charmed baryons. There are also several bosons, including the W and Z bosons and the Higgs boson, that can decay into charm quarks.

LHCb experiment

The LHCb (Large Hadron Collider beauty) experiment is a particle physics detector experiment collecting data at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. LHCb is a specialized b-physics experiment, designed primarily to measure the parameters of CP violation in the interactions of b-hadrons (heavy particles containing a bottom quark). Such studies can help to explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe. The detector is also able to perform measurements of production cross sections, exotic hadron spectroscopy, charm physics and electroweak physics in the forward region.

Branching fraction

In particle physics and nuclear physics, the branching fraction (or branching ratio) for a decay is the fraction of particles which decay by an individual decay mode or with respect to the total number of particles which decay. It applies to either the radioactive decay of atoms or the decay of elementary particles. It is equal to the ratio of the partial decay constant to the overall decay constant. Sometimes a partial half-life is given, but this term is misleading; due to competing modes, it is not true that half of the particles will decay through a particular decay mode after its partial half-life.
