Network-level road traffic control remains a challenging problem. Macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) based dynamical models of large-scale urban networks enable development of model predictive perimeter control methods, which represent an efficient cong ...

In this thesis, we developed a research direction that combines the theoretical concepts of complex networks with practical needs and applications in the field of transportation engineering. As a first objective we analyzed the phenomenon of congestion pr ...

In contrast to the Swiss load model used for new bridge structures (SIA 261), which has roots in a Europe-wide weigh-in-motion (WIM) study and considers the full design life of new structures, the model for existing structures (SIA 269) from 2005 is derive ...

City-level traffic management remains a challenging problem. Model predictive perimeter control approaches employing macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) based models of large-scale urban road traffic represent a high-performance solution with substantial ...

Human mobility in large cities is a complex dynamical system with high density of population, many transport modes to compete for limited available space and many operators that try to efficiently manage different parts of this system. New emerging modes o ...

Traffic management for large-scale urban road networks remains a challenging problem. Aggregated dynamical models of city-scale traffic, based on the macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD), enable development of model-based control schemes for use with the ...

The new era of sharing information and "big data" has raised our expectations to make mobility more predictable and controllable through a better utilization of data and existing resources. The realization of these opportunities requires going beyond the e ...

Travel time is an important network performance measure and it quantifies congestion in a manner easily understood by all transport users. In urban networks, travel time estimation is challenging due to number of reasons such as, fluctuations in traffic fl ...

Vehicular networks, in which cars communicate wirelessly to exchange information on traffic conditions, offer a promising way to improve road safety. Yet ensuring the correct functioning of such a system is essential: malicious or faulty devices transmitti ...
