Since the discovery of two-dimensional magnetic materials in 2017, an uncharted territory has opened within the field of spintronics, drawing intense interest from both experimental and computational research. From a computational perspective, studying magnetic materials requires addressing several challenges: achieving accurate simulations of localized electrons, identifying the ground state magnetic ordering, determining the parameters of effective Hamiltonians, such as Hubbard parameters or exchange inte

In this work, we extend our previous studies (Singh et al 2023, Nucl. Fusion 63, 086029; Singh et al 2024, Nucl. Fusion 64, 106005) by performing global δf electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations including collisions using the ORB5 particle-in-cell (PIC) code, spanning the plasma from magnetic axis to separatrix. The analysis focuses on ion temperature gradient (ITG) and trapped electron mode (TEM) turbulence in both linear and nonlinear regimes for experimentally relevant profiles and parameters of the ADI

Electrodeposition has been widely used to develop micro-mechanical devices because it offers high dimensional accuracy, flexibility, and relatively low cost. In devices such as mechanical watches, micro-components are required to be made from non-magnetic, hard, and wear-resistant materials. Copper is a common non-magnetic material used in the electrodeposition process, but its intrinsic low strength and soft mechanical behavior limit its use in such applications. These limitations can be overcome by devel

Motivated by the recent observation of a uniform vector chirality (UVC) magnetic order in the maple-leaf lattice (MLL) realization

\mathrm{Ho_3ScO_6}

via powder neutron scattering experiments, we investigate the classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the maple-leaf lattice. The MLL features three symmetry-inequivalent nearest-neighbor couplings,

J_d

J_t

, and

J_h

. Previous studies, primarily focused on the case where

J_t = J_h

, identified a staggered vector chirality (SVC) order. Extendin

Common metal additive manufacturing technologies require intensive energy sources such as lasers to achieve the melting and bonding of a metallic feedstock. This leads to a sizeable carbon footprint especially for reflective materials such as aluminium. Moreover, it induces complex and turbulent melt pool dynamics leading to stochastic defect formation mechanisms that are hence difficult to suppress. We aim to propose an alternative approach similar to what is now practised on a large scale with thermoplast

Research into mesoscopic magnetic systems, which incorporate magnetic elements with dimensions ranging from a few nm up to a few 10s of micrometer, has been spurred on by the developments in their fabrication, characterisation, and control. Electron beam and optical lithography are key methods for their fabrication because they can be used to create tailor- made planar arrangements of elements or more complex layered structures. These can be further transformed into high quality three-dimensional mesoscale

This contribution will present a feasibility study and conceptual design of a tangential phase-contrast imaging (PCI) diagnostic for the new JT60SA tokamak. PCI is a well-known technique for measuring density fluctuations. Tangential launching, combined with an appropriate spatial filtering technique, affords the measurement highly improved spatial localization, as demonstrated in particular on the TCV tokamak. Tangential ports of 20cm diameter are envisioned to be used on JT60SA, obviating the need to moun

Spin caloritronics refers to research efforts in spintronics when a heat current plays a role. In this review, we start out by reviewing the predictions that can be drawn from the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. This serves as a conceptual framework in which to analyze the interplay of charge, spin and heat transport. This formalism predicts tensorial relations between vectorial quantities such as currents and gradients of chemical potentials or of temperature. Transverse effects such as the Nerns

Regular arrays of single atoms with stable magnetization represent the ultimate limit of ultrahigh density storage media. Here we report a self-assembled superlattice of individual and noninteracting Dy atoms on graphene grown on Ir(111), with magnetic hysteresis up to 5.6 T and spin lifetime of 1000 s at 2.5 K. The observed magnetic stability is a consequence of the intrinsic low electron and phonon densities of graphene and the 6-fold symmetry of the adsorption site. Our array of single atom magnets has a

A fundamental understanding of the quench phenomenon is particularly important in the design and operation of magnets using High Temperature Superconductors because the quench propagation velocity is low due to high specific heat at high temperature. We have performed the simulations of a high-current forced-flow conductor model to assess the key quench parameters, e. g. the temperature increase of the normal zone and its propagation velocity, using the CryoSoft code THEA. The sensitivity of these results o

It was noticed long time ago that the dielectric permittivity of BaTiO3 single crystals in the rhombohedral phase varies from observation to observation, but the microstructure mechanism behind this phenomenon remained unclear. We show that the variations in susceptibility can be related to the variable domain structure introduced by different pre-treatments at higher temperatures: Electrical depoling at room temperature leads to nano-sized domains and ultrahigh susceptibility in rhombohedral phase, whereas

The existence of a critical pressure gradient needed to drive the interchange instability is experimentally demonstrated in the simple magnetized torus TORoidal Plasma EXperiment [A. Fasoli et al., Phys. Plasmas 13, 055902 (2006)]. This gradient is reached during a scan in the neutral gas pressure pn. Around a critical value for pn, depending on the magnetic configuration and on the injected rf power, a small increase in the neutral gas pressure triggers a transition in the plasma behavior. The pressure pro

Recent years have witnessed increased efforts toward the accelerated acquisition of multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (nD NMR) spectra. Among the methods proposed to speed up these NMR experiments is "projection reconstruction," a scheme based on the acquisition of a reduced number of two-dimensional (2D) NMR data sets constituting cross sections of the nD time domain being sought. Another proposition involves "ultrafast" spectroscopy, capable of completing nD NMR acquisitions within a single scan

Reactions designed to give Se6[Sb(OTeF5)6]2 by the reaction of Se2Br2, 4Se, and 2Ag[Sb(OTeF5)6] lead to products that include [Ag2(Se6)(SO2)2][Sb(OTeF5)6]2 (1). The distorted cubic (Ag2Se6+2)n consists of a Se6 mol. bicapped by two silver cations (local D3d sym.). Reactions of AgMX6 (M = As, Sb) with selenium in liq. SO2 yielded crystals of [Ag2Se6][AsF6]2 (2) and [AgSe6][Ag2(SbF6)3] (3). Both salts contain stacked arrays of [AgSe6]+ half-sandwich cationic units. [Ag2Se6][AsF6]2 in addn. contains stronger,

The impact of the bootstrap current is investigated on the equilibrium properties of a two-period quasi-axisymmetric stellarator reactor with free boundary and on the corresponding ideal magnetohydrodynamic stability properties. Although the magnetic field strength B spectrum is dominated by a m/n = 1/0 component, the discrete filamentary coils trigger some small-amplitude symmetry-breaking components that can disturb,the quasi-symmetry of B. Finite beta causes the plasma column to shift outward in the abse

The orientation dependence of the longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient, d(33)(), is investigated as a function of temperature in BaTiO3 and PbTiO3 crystals using the Landau-Ginsburg-Devonshire theory. We show that a presence of the ferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transitions in BaTiO3 leads to enhanced d(33)() along nonpolar directions. The reason for this is that in the vicinity of a phase transition temperature at which a polarization vector changes its direction (tetragonal-orthorhombic/monoclinic,

The original magnetic properties of nanometre-sized particles are due to the distinct contributions of volume, surface and step atoms. To disentangle these contributions is an ongoing challenge of materials science. Here we introduce a method enabling the identification. of the remarkably different contributions of surface and perimeter atoms to the magnetic anisotropy energy of two-dimensional nanostructures. Our method uses the generally nonlinear relationship between perimeter length and surface area. At

We propose an approach for magnetic microbead transport in microfluidic channels over long-range distances using an array of simple planar coils. The latter are placed in a uniform static magnetic field, the role of which is to impose a permanent magnetic moment to the microbeads. The very small magnetic field gradient of a simple planar coil is then sufficient to displace the microbeads. The long-range displacement is assured by arranging adjacent coils in the array with spatial overlap in a three-phase ac

The quasi-1D S = 1/2 antiferromagnet CuGeO3 undergoes a spin-Peierls transition to a dimerised singlet quantum ground state, with S = 1 carrying pairs of domain walls as elementary excitations. Applying a large magnetic field, the domain walls-solitons-can be condensed into the ground state, forming a static incommensurate soliton lattice, which has been investigated by neutron scattering. The static soliton structure was found to be in good accordance to field theoretical and numerical calculations, while

[Rh-4 (CO)(6) (mu-Me2PCH2PMe2)(3)], the first example of a hexasubstituted derivative of Rh-4(CO)(12), has a ground state geometry in the solid state and in solution of C-s symmetry with four edge-bridging carbonyls and with each diphosphine ligand bridging one edge of the same Rh-3 face. The result is an imbalance of the formal electron count at two rhodium atoms. As observed by C-13- and P-31-NMR, the mobility of the ligands is restricted to one mu-CO eta-CO site exchange which astonishingly does not
