Two Approaches in System Modeling and Their Illustrations with MDA and RM-ODP

Abstract

We explain two approaches to the design of system modeling frameworks and perform their comparative analysis. The analysis familiarizes the reader with strengths and weaknesses of the approaches, and thus helps to grasp the preferences for their practical applications. The first of the approaches is illustrated with the example of Model Driven Architecture (MDA), and the second with the example of Reference Model of Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP).

Systems modeling

Systems modeling or system modeling is the interdisciplinary study of the use of models to conceptualize and construct systems in business and IT development. A common type of systems modeling is function modeling, with specific techniques such as the Functional Flow Block Diagram and IDEF0. These models can be extended using functional decomposition, and can be linked to requirements models for further systems partition.

View model

A view model or viewpoints framework in systems engineering, software engineering, and enterprise engineering is a framework which defines a coherent set of views to be used in the construction of a system architecture, software architecture, or enterprise architecture. A view is a representation of the whole system from the perspective of a related set of concerns. Since the early 1990s there have been a number of efforts to prescribe approaches for describing and analyzing system architectures.

Modeling language

A modeling language is any artificial language that can be used to express data, information or knowledge or systems in a structure that is defined by a consistent set of rules. The rules are used for interpretation of the meaning of components in the structure Programing language. A modeling language can be graphical or textual. Graphical modeling languages use a diagram technique with named symbols that represent concepts and lines that connect the symbols and represent relationships and various other graphical notation to represent constraints.
