Abstract

We present a novel distributed sensing technique that makes possible the observation of Brillouin gain spectral distribution and acoustic decay time in photonic crystal fiber as well as in standard single-mode fiber.

Optical fiber

An optical fiber, or optical fibre in Commonwealth English, is a flexible, transparent fiber made by drawing glass (silica) or plastic to a diameter slightly thicker than that of a human hair. Photonic crystals occur in nature in the form of structural coloration and animal reflectors, and, as artificially produced, promise to be useful in a range of applications.
