Reaction of methoxyoxirane with inorganic phosphate and reflections on SN2-reactivity

Abstract

In the context of the chem. of potentially prebiol. natural products it would be important to know whether, from a chem. point of view, glycolaldehyde phosphate could be considered as a potentially prebiol. natural material. In this connection, the reaction of rac. methoxyoxirane with inorg. phosphate in aq. soln. was checked: it does not produce glycolaldehyde phosphate but the 1-phosphate of 1-methoxy-1,2-ethanediol instead. In this context, earlier reflections on the question of how electroneg. substituents influence SN2-reactivity are recorded. [on SciFinder (R)]

Phosphate

In chemistry, a phosphate is an anion, salt, functional group or ester derived from a phosphoric acid. It most commonly means orthophosphate, a derivative of orthophosphoric acid, aka. phosphoric acid . The phosphate or orthophosphate ion [PO4]3− is derived from phosphoric acid by the removal of three protons H+. Removal of one proton gives the dihydrogen phosphate ion [H2PO4]− while removal of two ions gives the hydrogen phosphate ion [HPO4]2−. These names are also used for salts of those anions, such as ammonium dihydrogen phosphate and trisodium phosphate.

Elimination reaction

An elimination reaction is a type of organic reaction in which two substituents are removed from a molecule in either a one- or two-step mechanism. The one-step mechanism is known as the E2 reaction, and the two-step mechanism is known as the E1 reaction. The numbers refer not to the number of steps in the mechanism, but rather to the kinetics of the reaction: E2 is bimolecular (second-order) while E1 is unimolecular (first-order). In cases where the molecule is able to stabilize an anion but possesses a poor leaving group, a third type of reaction, E1CB, exists.

SN2 reaction

DISPLAYTITLE:SN2 reaction The SN2 reaction is a type of reaction mechanism that is common in organic chemistry. In this mechanism, one bond is broken and one bond is formed in a concerted way, i.e., in one step. The name SN2 refers to the Hughes-Ingold symbol of the mechanism: "SN" indicates that the reaction is a nucleophilic substitution, and "2" that it proceeds via a bi-molecular mechanism, which means both the reacting species are involved in the rate-determining step.
