The Thesis is aimed at developing spectroscopic diagnostics in order to further our understanding of the dynamics of neutral particles in plasmas relevant to fusion applications. Experimental efforts will be devoted to implementing Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) diagnostics on both hydrogen and helium plasmas. These will be complemented by numerical studies through the development of a Collisional-Radiative Model for He plasmas. The experiments will be carried out on the Resonant Antenna Ion Device (RAID), a helicon plasma source located at the Swiss Plasma Center. The plasma conditions produced in RAID are similar to those expected in tokamak divertors, with the advantage of steady-state operation and ease of access of an array of diagnostics.
