Abstract

Tetraphenylethylene is a prototypical example of a molecule displaying aggregation-induced emission. Despite many studies on the optical properties of TPE and its derivatives, the origin of the non-emissive behavior in the gas phase or in dilute solutions has yet to be unravelled. Here, we identify the ultrafast deactivation mechanisms responsible for the fluoresence quenching in isolated TPE.

Gas

Gas is one of the four fundamental states of matter. The others are solid, liquid, and plasma. A pure gas may be made up of individual atoms (e.g. a noble gas like neon), elemental molecules made from one type of atom (e.g. oxygen), or compound molecules made from a variety of atoms (e.g. carbon dioxide). If the attractive forces between the solvent and solute particles are greater than the attractive forces holding the solute particles together, the solvent particles pull the solute particles apart and surround them. These surrounded solute particles then move away from the solid solute and out into the solution.
