Electrostatic microinstabilities in ion internal barrier (ITB) and H-mode discharges of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak [O. Gruber, R. Arslanbekov, C. Atanasiu , Nucl. Fusion 41, 1369 (2001)] have been investigated with a full radius gyrokinetic code. The code models linear stability and includes the effect of an equilibrium radial electric field and trapped electrons. In order to simulate plasmas in experimental conditions [k(perpendicular to)rho(L)similar toO(1)], the long wavelength approximation in the quasin

A pair of toroidally localized in-vessel antennas in Alcator C-Mod were used to excite and detect stable toroidal Alfven eigenmode (TAE) resonances in the frequency range of 400-500 kHz. By ramping the toroidal field, the plasma TAE frequency was swept through the constant antenna excitation frequency to find a resonance and the width of the resonance was measured to determine the effective damping rate of the mode. The toroidal field and density at the resonances were observed to scale as B-T proportional

This paper shows the importance and feasibility of real-time tomography in fusion experiments for the example of soft X-ray (SXR) position measurements. The requirement of non-magnetic real-time diagnostics in low frequencies for ITER is discussed. This is illustrated by recent results of rapid tomographic inversion of SXR measurements on tokamak TCV. Comparison with the magnetic reconstruction data has not only shown the valuable resolution capabilities of both techniques, but also revealed a slight depend

Interaction of waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) with a plasma has a number of key properties that make them attractive beyond pure heating. First, the waves can interact resonantly with either the plasma ions or electrons. In the case of ion cyclotron damping, a small number of resonant ions are often accelerated to high energies. These ions, apart from heating the bulk plasma via Coulomb collisions, can increase fusion reactivity, affect plasma stability and drive current. They have a

The large physical size of the JET tokamak, its heating systems and diagnostics, and its capability to operate with full deuterium-tritium (D-T) plasmas, including high-power tritium neutral beam injection (NBI), give it unique possibilities in fast particle research in fusion plasmas. These have already been used to generate significant (2-3 MW level) power in fusion a-particles in the 1997 D-T campaign. Recent JET experiments have concentrated on two important scenarios of relevance to next-step tokamak d

This paper investigates the recognition of group actions in meetings by modeling the joint behaviour of participants. Many meeting actions, such as presentations, discussions and consensus, are characterised by similar or complementary behaviour across participants. Recognising these meaningful actions is an important step towards the goal of providing effective browsing and summarisation of processed meetings. In this work, a corpus of meetings was collected in a room equipped with a number of microphones

Digital imaging brings a new set of possibilities to photography. For example, little pictures can be assembled to form a large panorama, and digital cameras are trying to mimic the human visual system to produce better pictures. This manuscript aims at developing the algorithms required to stitch a set of pictures together to obtain a bigger and better image. This thesis explores three important topics of panoramic photography: The alignment of images, the matching of the colours, and the rendering of the

Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities can limit the performance and degrade the confinement of tokamak plasmas. The Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV), unique for its capability to produce a variety of poloidal plasma shapes, has been used to analyse various instabilities and compare their behaviour with theoretical predictions. These instabilities are perturbations of the magnetic field which usually extend to the plasma edge where they can be detected with magnetic pick-up coils as magnetic fluctuat

A large CdTe-based tomographic system has been installed two years ago on the TORE SUPRA tokamak, for a detailed investigation of the dynamics of fast electrons generated by radio-frequency waves in Fusion plasmas, as a function of time, space and energy. With 59 chords and 8 energy channels per line-of-sight, this diagnostic is the largest in the fusion community dedicated to hard X-ray studies emitted by the plasma between 20 and 200 keV. A description of the tomography as well as its performance in the a

The Joint European Torus (JET) has recently operated with deuterium-tritium (DT) mixtures, carried out an International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) physics campaign in hydrogen, deuterium, DT and tritium, installed the Mark IIGB 'Gas Box' divertor fully by remote handling and started physics experiments with this more closed divertor. The DT experiments set records for fusion power (16.1 MW), ratio of fusion power to plasma input power (0.62, and 0.95 +/- 0.17 if a similar plasma could be obta

The effects of plasma shape on confinement and sawtooth stability are studied for positive and negative discharge triangularity and for different elongations with 1.5 MW centrally deposited ECH power

Ohmic H-mode has been regularly obtained on the TCV tokamak. This paper describes the change in magnetic activity occuring at the transition, the coherent activity during H-mode, a brief description of the dithering phase, and the activity associated with large and grassy ELMs.
