Anaerobic fermentation is a widely used technology for resource recovery from municipal sludge (e.g., primary sludge). Micro-aeration is an emerging strategy which can be incorporated into this technology. However, the effect of micro-aeration on the anaer ...

The production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) represents a relevant option to valorize municipal wastewater (MWW). In this context, different capture technologies can be used to recover organic carbon from wastewater in form of solids, while pre-treatment ...

The present doctoral thesis aimed to achieve a robust cultivation of microalgae by recycling nitrogen from a liquid digestate. However, the use of non-sterile nutrient source increases the risks of contamination of undesired organisms such as bacteria, vir ...

Given the great concern about phosphorus (P) resource depletion, it's promising to recover P from waste activated sludge (WAS) especially for agricultural application. To this end, it's necessary to understand the P speciation and fractionation within the ...

A synthetic diagnostic has been developed for the JET lost alpha scintillator probe, based on the ASCOT fast ion orbit following code and the AFSI fusion source code. The synthetic diagnostic models the velocity space distribution of lost fusion products i ...

New-generation bioprocesses using granular sludge aim for a high-rate removal of nutrients from wastewater with low footprint. Achieving enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) relies on the design of sludge beds and wastewater feeding conditions to ...

In this study, wastewater from the output of three different secondary treatment facilities (Activated Sludge, Moving Bed Bioreactor and Coagulation-Flocculation) present in the municipal wastewater treatment plant of Vidy, Lausanne (Switzerland), was furt ...

Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) from wastewater relies on the preferential selection of active polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAO) in the underlying bacterial community continuum. Efficient management of the bacterial resource requires ...

The process of anaerobic digestion is a common application in the treatment of industrial and communal wastewater treatment plants. The biochemical reactions taking place inside the fermenter can be described by a system of first order differential equatio ...

Nutrient removal performances of sequencing batch reactors using granular sludge for intensified biological wastewater treatment rely on optimal underlying microbial selection. Trigger factors of bacterial selection and nutrient removal were investigated i ...

The approach of wastewater treatment has shifted towards a holistic view in order to achieve sustainability in addition to environmental protection. The aerobic granular sludge (AGS) technology, which relies on the use of fast-settling granular biofilms ca ...

Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) in sequencing batch reactors (SBR) has recently made its proofs as full-scale technology for the biological treatment of urban wastewater. In contrast to conventional flocculent activated sludge, microorganisms aggregate to de ...

The competition of two Rhodocyclaceae-affiliated bacterial populations was assessed during the formation and maturation of aerobic granular sludge in two different types of anaerobic-aerobic sequencing batch reactors. Zoogloea spp. (57%) were predominant i ...
