Diffraction-before-destruction imaging with ultrashort X-ray pulses can visualize non-equilibrium processes, such as chemical reactions, with sub-femtosecond precision in the native environment. Here, a nanospecimen diffracts a single X-ray flash before it ...

Materials properties are strictly dependent on their microstructure. The internal symmetries and the disposition of the constituting atoms of a material, which depend on its crystallographic structure, greatly affect its response to mechanical, electromagn ...

In this manuscript, we describe a simple and accurate method for finding the temporal overlap of the laser pump and electron probe pulse in ultrafast TEM. Our approach is based on the observation that the outline of a nanoparticle blurs at time zero, a phe ...

A method is proposed to reconstruct the 3D molecular structure from micrographs collected at just one sample tilt angle in the random conical tilt scheme in cryo-electron microscopy. The method uses autocorrelation analysis on the micrographs to estimate f ...

High-pressure studies in silica are of great interest to earth and planetary sciences. Highpressure phases are rarely found in nature as a result of shock events like meteorite impacts or volcanic events in nature. Recreating these phases remains a challen ...

Transmission electron microscopy at atomic-resolution is a crucial tool in a variety of fields, ranging from materials science to biology. [1,2] Fast electron cameras have recently enabled high-speed observations atomic resolution. [3] Moreover, they have ...

We present CryoGAN, a new paradigm for single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) reconstruction based on unsupervised deep adversarial learning. In single-particle cryo-EM, the structure of a biomolecule needs to be reconstructed from a large set ...

Atomic-resolution electron microscopy is a crucial tool to elucidate the structure of matter. Recently, fast electron cameras have added the time domain to high-resolution imaging, allowing static images to be acquired as movies from which sample drift can ...

Self-referencing turns pulsed laser systems into self-referenced frequency combs. Such frequency combs allow counting of optical frequencies and have a wide range of applications. The required optical bandwidth to implement self-referencing is typically ob ...

In 2007 a new method to generate optical frequency combs was discovered. In contrast to conventional frequency combs which are generated from pulsed laser sources, these Kerr frequency combs (also known as microresonator frequency combs) are generated enti ...

Detecting and counting single photons is useful in an increasingly large number of applications. Most applications require large formats, approaching and even far exceeding 1 megapixel. In this thesis, we look at the challenges of massively parallel photon ...

Nanocarriers, including liposomes, offer great opportunities for targeted and controlled therapy. The development in this field has led to a large panel of drug delivery systems, which can be classified into 3 different nanovector generations. However, the ...

Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED) has been widely used to investigate the structural dynamics of molecules and materials. Femtosecond (fs) electron bunches are used to obtain diffraction images of a specimen upon photo-excitation by a temporally delayed ...

A phase-stable superposition of femtosecond pulses from a compact erbium-doped fiber source and their second harmonic is shown to induce ultrashort similar to mu A current bursts in single unbiased GaAs nanowires. Current injection relies on a quantum inte ...

Water vapor is a fundamental constituent of the atmosphere and is the most abundant green house gas thus having an important influence on climate. It is as well a key prognostic variable for numerical weather prediction models (NWP). Currently, the vertica ...

The process of second harmonic generation (SHG) has a unique property of forming a sharp optical contrast between noncentrosymmetric crystalline materials and other types of material, which is a highly valuable asset for contrast microscopy. The coherent s ...

The effects of neutron irradiation on austenitic stainless steels, usually used for the manufacturing of internal elements of nuclear reactors (e.g. the core shrouds), are the alteration of the microstructure, and, as a consequence, of the mechanical prope ...
