Experiments in digital publishing: creating a digital compendium

Abstract

This chapter introduces the readers and users to the goals of the digitally provided index of the compendium Structures of Epic Poetry and the methods used for it. It also expands on the broader applicability of digital methods in view of electronic publishing, and to the problems involved. The chapter focuses on two aspects of my work for the compendium, where digital tools played a central role: the creation of the index locorum and the development of a digital compendium to the printed volumes.

Electronic publishing

Electronic publishing (also referred to as publishing, digital publishing, or online publishing) includes the digital publication of e-books, digital magazines, and the development of digital libraries and catalogues. It also includes the editing of books, journals, and magazines to be posted on a screen (computer, e-reader, tablet, or smartphone). Electronic publishing has become common in scientific publishing where it has been argued that peer-reviewed scientific journals are in the process of being replaced by electronic publishing.

International development

International development or global development is a broad concept denoting the idea that societies and countries have differing levels of economic or human development on an international scale. It is the basis for international classifications such as developed country, developing country and least developed country, and for a field of practice and research that in various ways engages with international development processes. There are, however, many schools of thought and conventions regarding which are the exact features constituting the "development" of a country.

Development economics

Development economics is a branch of economics which deals with economic aspects of the development process in low- and middle- income countries. Its focus is not only on methods of promoting economic development, economic growth and structural change but also on improving the potential for the mass of the population, for example, through health, education and workplace conditions, whether through public or private channels.
