Moving walkways are pedestrian dedicated hardware which generally decrease pedestrian travel time. We propose the utilization of these devices to dynamically control pedestrian flows in order to improve pedestrian dynamics. Three variations of a control st ...

Forecasting pedestrians' future motions is essential for autonomous driving systems to safely navigate in urban areas. However, existing prediction algorithms often overly rely on past observed trajectories and tend to fail around abrupt dynamic changes, s ...

Autonomous mobility devices such as transport, cleaning, and delivery robots, hold a massive economic and social benefit. However, their deployment should not endanger bystanders, particularly vulnerable populations such as children and older adults who ar ...

Pedestrians, like drivers, generally dislike congestion. This is true for most pedestrian environments: trains stations, airports, or shopping malls. Furthermore, pedestrian congestion also influences the attractiveness of public transportation networks. T ...

Exploiting the full potential of pedestrian infrastructure is becoming critical in many environments which cannot be easily expanded to cope with the increasing pedestrian demand. This is particularly true for train stations as in many dense cities space i ...

The modeling of walking behavior and design of walk-friendly urban pathways have been of interest to many researchers over the past decades. One of the major issues in pedestrian modeling is path planning decision-making in a dynamic walking environment wi ...

New fabrication technologies have significantly decreased the cost of fabrication of shapes with highly complex geometric structure. One important application of complex fine-scale geometric structures is to create variable effective elastic material prope ...

We introduce a probabilistic modeling approach for pedestrian speed density relationship. It is motivated by a high scatter in real data that precludes the use of traditional equilibrium relationships. To characterize the observed pattern, we relax the hom ...

Exploiting the full potential of pedestrian infrastructures is becoming vital in many environments which cannot be easily expanded to cope with the increasing demand. This is particularly true of train stations in many dense cities since space is limited. ...

Biomimetic behavior includes aspects such as learning from previous experience, self-diagnosis, and adaptation. This thesis describes control methodologies that are essential to development towards biomimetic behavior of a complex deployable structure. Sim ...

We propose a novel approach to pedestrian flow characterization. The definitions of density, flow and velocity existing in the literature are extended through a data-driven spatio-temporal discretization framework. The framework is based on three-dimension ...

The focus of the thesis is the utilization of the data collected using state-of-the-art tracking technologies for the characterization and modeling of pedestrian movements. In this context, the main objectives are the development of (i) data-driven definit ...

A framework for assessing the usage and level-of-service of rail access facilities is presented. It consists of two parts. A dynamic demand estimator allows to obtain time-dependent pedestrian origin-destination demand within walking facilities. Using that ...

This thesis addresses two modeling problems related to pedestrian flows in train stations, namely that of estimating pedestrian origin-destination demand in rail access facilities, and that of describing the propagation of pedestrians in walking facilities ...

We propose a probabilistic modeling approach to represent the speed-density relationship of pedestrian traffic. The approach is data-driven, and it is motivated by the presence of high scatter in the raw data that we have analyzed. We show the validity of ...

Aluminum structures provide a high strength-to-weight ratio, are corrosion resistant, and are esthetically pleasing. Hence, their use in bridge construction has recently begun to increase, especially for pedestrian bridges. Because of their relative light ...

This thesis develops models of activity and destination choices in pedestrian facilities from WiFi traces. We adapt the activity-based travel demand analysis of urban mobility to pedestrians and to digital footprints. We are interested in understanding the ...

A macroscopic loading model applicable to time-dependent and congested pedestrian flows in public walking areas is proposed. Building on the continuum theory of pedestrian flows and the cell transmission model for car traffic, an isotropic framework is dev ...

Detecting that pedestrians are present in front of a vehicle is highly desirable to avoid dangerous traffic situations. A novel vision-based system is presented to automatically detect far-away pedestrians with low-resolution cameras mounted in vehicles gi ...
