A step by step procedure combining analytical methods and simplified laboratory testing. is proposed for the study of cable protection against HEMP. The three steps of the method are: development of a cable coupling model, surface transfer impedance measurements by impulse current injections and EMP simulation on long cables by impulse current injections in the sheath. The second step is particularly important when the theory cannot take into account saturation effects in ferromagnetic sheaths. The third step represents a practical verification on long cables of the model proposed in the first step. This procedure was applied with good results to aerial cables proving the validity of the computer model.
