This studio teaches students about the elemental constructive, site, and programmatic forces of architecture and how these elements can be used to organize space and form a building. The architectural emphasis is on the building boundary design that considers the character of the enclosure, building-site thresholds, and inside/outside spatial connections that are made evident through the boundary design. In addition, this studio is structured to teach elements of landscape language and character, sustainable strategies, and their links to formal composition and performance. This studio is the first of four post-foundational studios that form the core of the B.S. Arch degree program. It is an intensive exploration of design methodologies, with particular attention given to sectional design, site design, and spatial sequencing. Students will design a Museum of the City of Cincinnati, and many of the exercises will further the students’ understanding of the city and of museology in general.
