Study of prompt D-0 meson production in pPb collisions at root(NN)-N-s=5 TeV

Abstract

Production of prompt D-0 mesons is studied in proton-lead and lead-proton collisions recorded at the LHCb detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.58 +/- 0.02 nb(-1) recorded at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of root(NN)-N-s = 5 TeV. Measurements of the differential cross-section, the forward-backward production ratio and the nuclear modification factor are reported using D-0 candidates with transverse momenta less than 10 GeV/c and rapidities in the ranges 1.5 < y* < 4.0 and -5.0 < y* < -2.5 in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass system.

Nuclear force

The nuclear force (or nucleon–nucleon interaction, residual strong force, or, historically, strong nuclear force) is a force that acts between the protons and neutrons of atoms. Neutrons and protons, both nucleons, are affected by the nuclear force almost identically. Since protons have charge +1 e, they experience an electric force that tends to push them apart, but at short range the attractive nuclear force is strong enough to overcome the electromagnetic force. Gluons are the force carriers of the theory, just as photons are for the electromagnetic force in quantum electrodynamics.

Proton

A proton is a stable subatomic particle, symbol _Proton, H+, or 1H+ with a positive electric charge of +1 e (elementary charge). Its mass is slightly less than that of a neutron and 1,836 times the mass of an electron (the proton-to-electron mass ratio). Protons and neutrons, each with masses of approximately one atomic mass unit, are jointly referred to as "nucleons" (particles present in atomic nuclei). One or more protons are present in the nucleus of every atom.
