Low-Noise, Frequency-Agile Photonic Integrated Blue Laser for LiDAR and Underwater Communication

Abstract

Frequency-agile, low-noise blue lasers are important for atomic clocks, aerosol LiDAR, and underwater communications, but currently no chip-scale devices exist. We present a photonic integrated blue laser combining self-injection locking to a Si3N4 photonic integrated circuit with monolithically integrated AIN piezoactuators providing frequency agility.

Atomic clock

An atomic clock is a clock that measures time by monitoring the resonant frequency of atoms. It is based on atoms having different energy levels. Electron states in an atom are associated with different energy levels, and in transitions between such states they interact with a very specific frequency of electromagnetic radiation. Radio clock

A radio clock or radio-controlled clock (RCC), and often (incorrectly and colloquially) referred to as an "atomic clock", is a type of quartz clock or watch that is automatically synchronized to a time code transmitted by a radio transmitter connected to a time standard such as an atomic clock. Such a clock may be synchronized to the time sent by a single transmitter, such as many national or regional time transmitters, or may use the multiple transmitters used by satellite navigation systems such as Global Positioning System.

Noise

Noise is unwanted sound considered unpleasant, loud, or disruptive to hearing. From a physics standpoint, there is no distinction between noise and desired sound, as both are vibrations through a medium, such as air or water. The difference arises when the brain receives and perceives a sound. Acoustic noise is any sound in the acoustic domain, either deliberate (e.g., music or speech) or unintended. In contrast, noise in electronics may not be audible to the human ear and may require instruments for detection.
