Here we report the progress of the development and optimization of operational scenarios for ITER and beyond, focusing upon baseline, hybrid, and steady-state scenarios since 2007. This includes advancements made by the integrated operation scenarios (IOS) ...

On the basis of several recent breakthroughs in fusion research, many activities have been launched around the world to develop fusion power plants on the fastest possible time scale. In this context, high-fidelity simulations of the plasma behavior on lar ...

Experimental results from several tokamaks suggest a strong impact of divertor density regimes on turbulent transport in the edge plasma. Reciprocally, the change in cross- field transport and Scrape-Off-Layer (SOL) width affects the access to density regi ...

This work addresses the input current allocation problem for the magnetic control system of the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV). Given the available actuators (i.e. poloidal field coils) on the TCV device, this work aims to optimize the input curren ...

Electron-Cyclotron waves are routinely used in tokamaks to heat the plasma and to drive current through the electron channel. Their unique ability to drive very localized current renders them the main foreseen tool for neoclassical tearing mode mitigation ...

Estimation of the dynamic evolution of the electron plasma density during a tokamak discharge is crucial since it directly affects the plasma performance, confinement and stability. Therefore it needs to be monitored and controlled. Knowledge of the densit ...

A core fluctuation diagnostic based on the phase-contrast imaging (PCI) technique has been designed for the JT-60SA tokamak, with the assistance of a synthetic diagnostic coupled to a gyrokinetic code. Using a tangentially viewing geometry, this system wou ...

The scattering of millimeter-wave beams from electron density fluctuations and the associated beam broadening are experimentally demonstrated. Using a dedicated setup, instantaneous deflection and (de-)focusing of the beam due to density blobs on the beam ...

In a typical fusion experiment, the plasma can have several possible confinement modes. At the tokamak a configuration variable, aside from the low (L) and high (H) confinement modes, an additional mode, dithering (D), is frequently observed. Developing me ...

Innovative high-frequency magnetic sensors have been designed and manufactured in-house for installation on the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV), which are now routinely operational during the TCV experimental campaigns. These sensors combine the Low ...

Synchrotron radiation observed from runaway electrons (REs) in tokamaks depends upon the position and size of the RE beam, the RE energy and pitch distributions, as well as the location of the observer. We show experimental synchrotron images of a vertical ...

Recent TCV experiments confirm the predicted formation of an electric potential well, below the magnetic X-point, in configurations with unfavorable

B_t

field direction (ion

\nabla B

drift away from the divertor), that substantially reshapes the typica ...

For electricity producing tokamak fusion reactors like EU-DEMO, it is prudent to choose a plasma scenario close to the ITER baseline, where the largest amount of experimental evidence is available. Nevertheless, there are some aspects in which ITER and EU- ...

Actuator management is an essential part of a modern tokamak plasma control system. It has to deal with a large number of control task simultaneously, needs to be able to operate close to stability limits and to avoid disruptions. In the ASDEX Upgrade toka ...

A study of mixed hydrogen-deuterium H-mode plasmas has been carried out in JET-ILW to strengthen the physics basis for extrapolations to JET D-T operation and to support the development of strategies for isotope ratio control in future experiments. Variati ...

Electron-scale micro-turbulence driven by the electron temperature gradient (ETG) instability has recently been shown to impact the electron heat transport in tokamaks. Given the relevance of these mechanisms for ITER scenarios, a new study has been carrie ...

This paper further analyses the EDGE2D-EIRENE simulations presented by Chankin et al (2017 Nucl. Mater. Energy 12 273), of L-mode JET plasmas in vertical-vertical (VV) and Vertical-horizontal (VH) divertor configurations. As expected, the simulated outer d ...

The impact of plasma shaping on tokamak scrape-off layer (SOL) turbulence is investigated. The drift-reduced Braginskii equations are written for arbitrary magnetic geometries, and an analytical equilibrium model is used to introduce the dependence of turb ...

In the standard scenario of tokamak plasma operation, sawtooth crashes are the main perturbations that can trigger performance-degrading, and potentially disruption-generating, neoclassical tearing modes. This Letter demonstrates sawtooth pacing by real-ti ...

A set of 24 saddle loops is used on the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV) to measure the radial magnetic flux at different toroidal and vertical positions. The new system is calibrated together with the standard magnetic diagnostics on TCV. Based on t ...
