Mission
Modeling the brain: Martin's research focuses on a computational understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying natural intelligence in vision and language. To achieve this goal, he bridges Deep Learning, Neuroscience, and Cognitive Science, building artificial neural network models that match the brain’s neural representations in their internal processing and are aligned to

Mission
Angela Renton completed her PhD in 2022 at under the supervision of Prof. Jason Mattingley, at The University of Queensland, Australia. Her PhD investigated the development of novel neurofeedback and closed-loop research methods to causally investigate the neural mechanisms of visual perception. As a postdoctoral research fellow, she has expanded on this work, working on real-time ne

I obtained my PhD (2012-2018) in KU Leuven/VIB, Belgium where I investigated astrocyte heterogeneity using single cell transcriptomics. During this period I developed tools to acutely and specifically isolate astrocytes from adult brain and identified five astrocyte subtypes in the cortex and hippocampus of mouse brain expanding previous understanding of astrocyte variability.Following my PhD, I did my first post-doc in
Valerio ZerbiDr. Valerio Zerbi is a pioneer of preclinical magnetic resonance functional neuroimaging. At his lab at EPFL, Valerio and his team use functional MRI recordings in rodents in combination with neural modulation and computational approaches to study the mechanisms that link cellular activity to large-scale network (dys)function. His long-term ambition is to advance the development of personalised strategies based on imaging and artificial intelligence, for the diagnosis and prognosis of developmental brain disorders. Valerio is the recipient of the ETH Postdoctoral (2014), the Swiss National Science Foundation AMBIZIONE
(2017) and ECCELLENZA (2021) fellowships.
Jiancheng YangI am a 4th-year PhD student in the Department of Electronic Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, advised by Prof. Bingbing Ni. I received BEng and MEng degree in the Department of Automation from the same university. Enrolled in a double master degree program, I spent 2 years in France with an Engineer degree. I was a visiting research fellow in Visual Computing Group at Harvard University. I am now visiting EPFL CVLAB, working with Prof. Pascal Fua.I focus on medical image analysis, 3D computer vision and trustworthy machine learning, with a clinical emphasis on lung cancer and thoracic diseases. I have (co-)first-authored more than 10 papers on top-tier journals / conferences, e.g., Cancer Research, CVPR, MICCAI and NeurIPS. I was a reviewer for more than 10 prestigious venues, a top-ranking participant for several AI competitions, and the lead organizer for MICCAI 2020 RibFrac Challenge.Updated on April, 2021.

LLMs (Large Language Models), NLP (Natural Language Processing), Automated Reasoning
Mission
My work focuses on developing robust methods for autoformalization and automated theorem proving using large language models. I aim to enhance the reasoning reliability of modern AI systems by reducing hallucinations, improving predictability, and integrating formal verification techniques and tools into LLM-based pipelines.
Before joining EDIC, I completed a Bachelor’s in Mathematics and Computer Science
Georg Michael Joachim StarkeDr. Georg Starke is a postdoctoral researcher at the College of Humanities at EPFL, working in the
Intelligent Systems Ethics Group
. As member of the
Hybrid Minds
project, Georg’s research examines the ethics of using artificial intelligence in medicine, with particular regard to neurological and psychiatric applications. Beyond AI ethics, Georg is also interested in history and philosophy of science, philosophy of psychiatry, medical ethics, and questions at the intersection of philosophy of mind and comparative psychology.
Georg has been trained in medicine and in philosophy, concluding both studies with a respective doctoral degree. He studied medicine at the Technical University of Munich and was visiting student at the University of Buenos Aires, the Hebrew University Jerusalem, and the University of Oxford. His medical doctoral thesis investigated subcortical correlates of social fear, using model-based fMRI. In parallel to his medical studies, Georg obtained a BA in philosophy from the Munich School of Philosophy and an MPhil in History, Philosophy and Sociology of Science, Technology and Medicine from the University of Cambridge. His PhD in bioethics at the University of Basel, defended in 2022, shed light on the notion of trust in medical AI and scrutinized the trustworthiness of clinical AI appliances with particular view to fairness and explainability.
