The main nucleating vapor in the atmosphere is thought to be sulfuric acid (H2SO4), stabilized by ammonia (NH3). However, in marine and polar regions, NH3 is generally low, and H2SO4 is frequently found together with iodine oxoacids [HIOx, i.e., iodic acid ...

Excessive nitrogen deposition from anthropogenic activities poses significant challenges to ecosystems and air quality.1 The atmospheric deposition of ammonium and nitrate plays a critical role in regulating ecosystem productivity and driving particulate m ...

Atmospheric observations in remote locations offer a possibility of exploring trace gas and particle concentrations in pristine environments. However, data from remote areas are often contaminated by pollution from local sources. Detecting this contaminati ...

The remote central Arctic during summertime has a pristine atmosphere with very low aerosol particle concentrations. As the region becomes increasingly ice-free during summer, enhanced oceanatmosphere fluxes of aerosol particles and precursor gases may the ...

Aerosol and trace gas measurements are strongly affected by the ship exhaust and other human activities (e.g., helicopter flights). Therefore, it is important to discriminate between clean and polluted periods. This mask provides an indication of clean per ...

The size distribution of neutral and charged particles was measured using a neutral cluster and air ion spectrometer (NAIS) instrument. The concentration was corrected for diffusional losses in the inlet. The concentration and temporal dynamics of small pa ...

Measurements of iodic acid, sulfuric acid and methanesulfonic acid concentration in the gas phase obtained with a nitrate chemical ionization mass spectrometer (we used an APi-TOF mass spectrometer produced by Tofwerk AG coupled with a Chemical ionization ...

New particle formation (NPF) and growth can be an important source of cloud condensation nuclei for the Arctic atmosphere, where cloud formation is sensitive to their availability. Low-level clouds influence the Arctic energy budget, and likely contribute ...

The Pollution Detection Algorithm (PDA) is an algorithm to identify and flag periods of primary polluted data in remote atmospheric time series in five steps. The first and most important step identifies polluted periods based on the gradient (time-derivat ...

Vertical in situ measurements of aerosols and trace gases were conducted in Fairbanks, Alaska, during winter 2022 as part of the Alaskan Layered Pollution and Chemical Analysis campaign (ALPACA). Using a tethered balloon, the study explores the dispersion ...

The aerosol size distribution was obtained combining measurements from a neutral and air ion spectrometer (NAIS) with a differential mobility particle sizer (DMPS). Merging particle size distribution (PSD) measurements from different instruments allows to ...

The aerosol size distribution was measured with a custom made scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS), range 18 – 660 nm. Aerosols are important for a variety of reasons, one of the most prominent is that a sub-set of the aerosol population can act as cl ...

This dataset contains a collection of ancillary data that were used for the publication Frequent new particle formation over the high Arctic pack ice by enhanced iodine emissions (Baccarini et al., 2020, Nature Comm.). Some of these datasets can be reprodu ...

Predictions of cloud droplet activation in the late summertime (September) central Arctic Ocean are made using κ-Köhler theory with novel observations of the aerosol chemical composition from a high-resolution time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectr ...

The summertime high Arctic atmosphere is characterized by extremely low aerosol abundance, such that small natural aerosol inputs have a strong influence on cloud formation and surface temperature. The physical sources and the mechanisms responsible for ae ...

Frequency and intensity of warm and moist air-mass intrusions into the Arctic have increased over the past decades and have been related to sea ice melt. During our year-long expedition in the remote central Arctic Ocean, a record-breaking increase in temp ...
