When the observation of small headwater catchments in the pre-Alpine Alptal valley (central Switzerland) started in the late 1960s, the researchers were mainly interested in questions related to floods and forest management. Investigations of geomorphologi ...

Headwater streams often experience intermittent flow. Consequently, the flowing drainage network expands and contracts and the flowing drainage density (DD) varies over time. Monitoring the DD dynamics is essential to understand the processes controlling i ...

Time series analyses of solute concentrations in streamwater and precipitation are powerful tools for unraveling the interplay of hydrological and biogeochemical processes at the catchment scale. While such datasets are available for many sites around the ...

Hydrological extremes can affect nutrient export from catchments to streams, posing a threat to aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the effects of hydrological drought on nitrate concentrations in the streamflow of 182 German catchments from ...

Stable isotope ratios of water (𝛿 18O,𝛿 2H) have long been used to study a core question in plant ecology and ecohydrology: “From where do plants take up water?” Indeed, decades of research has involved sampling potential plant water sources in the subsurf ...

Ecohydrology published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.The re-emergence of water in dry stream reaches affects streamwater chemistry due to the flushing of sediment and nutrients from previously dry channels and the increased connectivity between hillslopes and s ...

Automated field sampling of streamwater or precipitation for subsequent analysis of stable water isotopes (H-2 and O-18) is often conducted with off-the-shelf automated samplers. However, when water samples are stored in the field for days and weeks in ope ...

The young water fraction represents the portion of water molecules in a stream that have entered the catchment relatively recently, typically within 2-3 months. It can be reliably estimated in spatially heterogeneous and nonstationary catchments from the a ...

This dataset contains four years of daily measurements of the natural isotopic composition (2H, 18O) of precipitation and stream water at the Alp catchment (area 47 km2) in Central Switzerland and two of its tributaries (0.7 km2 and 1.6 km2). In addition, ...

Time series of the natural isotopic composition (2H, 18O) of precipitation and streamwater can provide important insights into ecohydrological phenomena at the catchment scale. However, multi-year, high-frequency isotope datasets are generally scarce, limi ...
