Objective. Peripheral nerve interfaces have the potential to restore sensory, motor, and visceral functions. In particular, intraneural interfaces allow targeting deep neural structures with high selectivity, even if their performance strongly depends upon ...

Bioelectromagnetics published by Wiley Periodicals LLC on behalf of Bioelectromagnetics Society.Electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves via implanted electrodes has been shown to be a promising approach to restore sensation, movement, and autonomic fun ...

Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes severe motor and sensory deficits, and there are currently no approved treatments for recovery. Nearly 70% of patients with SCI experience pathological muscle cocontraction and spasticity, accompanied by clinical signs such ...

Computational models have been widely employed to study the electrical stimulation of the nervous system. Still, most applications either study fundamental mechanisms underlying stimulation, or address qualitative scientific questions. When quantitative qu ...

Objective. Bioelectronic medicine is opening new perspectives for the treatment of some major chronic diseases through the physical modulation of autonomic nervous system activity. Being the main peripheral route for electrical signals between central nerv ...

A method for optimizing at least one of a geometry, an implantation procedure, and/or stimulation protocol of one or more electrodes for an electrical stimulation of a target structure in a nervous system of a living being by a computer device, the method ...

Background: Emerging research increasingly supports that epidural spinal cord electrical stimulation (EES) combined with neurorehabilitation can improve motor recovery in spinal cord injury (SCI) subjects. Patients with lesions involving the medullary cone ...

Peripheral neural interfaces have been successfully used in the recent past to restore sensory-motor functions in disabled subjects and for the neuromodulation of the autonomic nervous system. The optimization of these neural interfaces is crucial for ethi ...

Retinal stimulation (RS) allows restoring vision in blind patients, but it covers only a narrow region of the visual field. Optic nerve stimulation (ONS) has the potential to produce visual perceptions spanning the whole visual field, but it produces very ...

Unmyelinated fibers account for a remarkable fraction of the peripheral nervous system and their activity is linked to many autonomic and somatic functions. While electrical recording of such activity from human-sized peripheral nerves holds significant po ...

Restoring the ability to walk is a priority for individuals with neurological disorders or neurotraumatic injuries, given its significant impact on independence and quality of life. Multimodal closed-loop strategies that integrate robotic assistance and ne ...

Providing a naturalistic tactile sensory feedback is currently one of the key challenges in neuroprosthetics. Modeling has played a fundamental role in the development of "biomimetic" stimulation protocols, determining optimal activation patterns to be eli ...

Electrical stimulation of the nervous system has emerged as a promising assistive technology in case of many injuries and illnesses across various parts of the nervous system. In particular, the invasive neuromodulation of the peripheral nervous system see ...

The use of self-paced omnidirectional treadmills equipped with body weight support and virtual reality environments in the clinical practice may allow the training of walking in safe and repeatable conditions across different pathologies. One premise for t ...

A method for determining the functional topography of a peripheral nerve ( 10 ) of a user comprising the steps of prearranging an electrode ( 100 ) comprising a number n of channels c i , with i = 1,2..., n, arranging the electrode (100) in such a way that ...

Multi-polar stimulation protocols have been used in the past to increase the selectivity of electrical stimulation of the nervous system. Nonetheless, the number of possible multipolar stimulation protocols is prohibitively large and cannot be explored dur ...

Bioelectronic medicine is an emerging approach to treat many types of diseases via electrical stimulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Because the vagus nerve (VN) is one of the most important nerves controlling several ANS functions, stimulation ...
