One of the many purposes for which social robots are designed is education, and there have been many attempts to systematize their potential in this field. What these attempts have in common is the recognition that learning can be supported in a variety of ...

Personality is one of the most important factors in human interactions, which retains its importance in human robot interactions with social robots. This work focusses on the varied linguistic strategies which characterize the personality traits of extrave ...

Context: Introducing Computer Science (CS) into formal education can be challenging, notably when considering the numerous stakeholders involved which include the students, teachers, schools, and policy makers. We believe these perspectives should be con ...

Wizard of Oz, a very commonly employed technique in human-robot interaction, faces the criticism of being deceptive as the humans interacting with the robot are told, if at all, only at the end of their interaction that there was in fact a human behind the ...

Sustaining changes in teachers’ practices is a challenge that determines the success of curricular reforms, from which Digital Education (DE) is not exempt. As the literature on sustainability is considered “scarce” and “scattered”, long-term studies model ...

In this paper, we propose and compare personalized models for Productive Engagement (PE) recognition. PE is defined as the level of engagement that maximizes learning. Previously, in the context of robot-mediated collaborative learning, a framework of prod ...

Various technological applications for body posture correction have been proposed in order to improve handwriting or facilitate its learning for children, under the assumption that a better posture promotes better handwriting. However, very little research ...

In educational HRI, it is generally believed that a robots behavior has a direct effect on the engagement of a user with the robot, the task at hand and also their partner in case of a collaborative activity. Increasing this engagement is then held respons ...

A wider incorporation of robots into classrooms is hampered by current technological limitations on full autonomy in social robots. Automated speech recognition, for example, a key enabler for vocal communication, is still unable to perform with sufficient ...

Maintaining a proper body posture during interactions with educational tablet applications is crucial for children's physical well-being and task performance, especially considering digital tablet's increasingly pervasive use in classrooms. In this work we ...

With the increasing importance of Computational Thinking (CT) at all levels of education, it is essential to have valid and reliable assessments. Currently, there is a lack of such assessments in upper primary school. That is why we present the development ...

The Robots for Learning workshop series aims at advancing the research topics related to the use of social robots in educational contexts. This year's half-day workshop follows on previous events in Human-Robot Interaction conferences focusing on efforts t ...

Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) are required to intervene in a learning activity while it is unfolding, to support the learner. To do so, they often rely on performance of a learner, as an approximation for engagement in the learning process. However, i ...

Gender inequality is a widespread problem in our society. It can manifest itself in many ways and contexts, and starting as early as primary school. While an increasing number of initiatives aim at tackling gender biases and inequalities, few of them are a ...

Collaborative learning appears in a joint intellectual efforts of individuals to understand an object of knowledge collectively. In their search for understanding the problems, meanings, and solutions, learners employ different multi-modal strategies. In t ...

Please note that this dataset corresponds to the training data used in "Social robots as skilled ignorant peers for supporting learning "[7]. This (second) version of the dataset additionally includes labels (PE score and cluster labels for each datapoint) ...

The success of social robots, even (or, especially) in use cases as simple as "manning" a booth to promote a product in a shopping mall, depends on their ability of interacting with humans in a timely, effective and enjoyable way. In this paper we present ...

Background Early exposure to Computer Science (CS) and Computational Thinking (CT) for all is critical to broaden participation and promote equity in the field. But how does the introduction of CS and CT into primary school curricula impact learning, perce ...

It is a well-established fact in the field of Human-Robot Interaction that the personality a social robot is endowed with (i.e., the one it expresses by its gestures and words) plays a key role towards the engagement experienced by any person interacting w ...

Humanoid robots, with a focus on personalised social behaviours, are increasingly being deployed in educational settings to support learning. However, crafting pedagogical HRI designs and robot interventions that have a real, positive impact on participant ...
