High-speed actuation of laser frequency(1)is critical in applications using lasers and frequency combs(2,3), and is a prerequisite for phase locking, frequency stabilization and stability transfer among optical carriers. For example, high-bandwidth feedbac ...

Supercontinuum generation and soliton microcomb formation both represent key techniques for the formation of coherent, ultrabroad optical frequency combs, enabling the RF-to-optical link. Coherent supercontinuum generation typically relies on ultrashort pu ...

Coherent ranging, also known as frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) laser-based light detection and ranging (lidar)(1) is used for long-range three-dimensional distance and velocimetry in autonomous driving(2,3). FMCW lidar maps distance to frequenc ...

Multistability in Kerr resonators which are driven by continuous or modulated optical waves gives rise to the superposition of distinct nonlinear states, yielding a unique platform for studying complex soliton dynamics. Here, by pumping a crystalline micro ...

Soliton microcombs constitute chip-scale optical frequency combs, and have the potential to impact a myriad of applications from frequency synthesis and telecommunications to astronomy. The demonstration of soliton formation via self-injection locking of t ...

Silicon photonics enables wafer-scale integration of optical functionalities on chip. Silicon-based laser frequency combs can provide integrated sources of mutually coherent laser lines for terabit-per-second transceivers, parallel coherent light detection ...

Dissipative Kerr soliton generation using self-injection-locked III-V lasers has enabled fully integrated hybrid microcombs that operate in turnkey mode and can access microwave repetition rates. Yet, continuous-wave-driven soliton microcombs exhibit low e ...

Solitons are shape preserving waveforms that are ubiquitous across nonlinear dynamical systems from BEC to hydrodynamics, and fall into two separate classes: bright solitons existing in anomalous group velocity dispersion, and switching waves forming 'dark ...

Continuous-wave-driven Kerr nonlinear microresonators give rise to self-organization in terms of dissipative Kerr solitons, which constitute optical frequency combs that can be used to generate low-noise microwave signals. Here, by applying either amplitud ...

We demonstrate an architecture for massively parallel frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) laser ranging (LiDAR) by transferring linear chirps of a single narrow linewidth laser onto all soliton comb teeth though generation of a dissipative Kerr soli ...

We demonstrate a hybrid photonic integrated laser with intrinsic linewidth of 40 Hz, while offering megahertz actuation bandwidth with the tuning range larger than 1 GHz, attained by a DFB laser self-injection locking to a high-Q Si3N4 microresonator with ...

The past decade has witnessed major advances in the development and system-level applications of photonic integrated microcombs, that are coherent, broadband optical frequency combs with repetition rates in the millimeter-wave to terahertz domain. Most of ...

Using phase-engineered coherent laser pulses produced by gain-switched semiconductor lasers, we generate low-power-threshold soliton microcombs whose repetition frequencies are in the X-band and K-band microwave ranges. (c) 2021TheAuthor(s) ...

We demonstrate an approach to dual-comb spectroscopy, based on dispersion engineered and ultra-broadband supercontinuum generation in photonic integrated nonlinear waveguides, and driven by low-noise fiber-laser combs. Both technologies arc statc-of-the-ar ...

Recent works on Kerr frequency combs demonstrated the possibility to simultaneously generate multiple soliton states with different group velocities in a single microresonator, which could be beneficial for many applications utilizing dual-comb systems. In ...

Silicon nitride (Si3N4) is an ever-maturing integrated platform for nonlinear optics but mostly considered for third-order [chi(3)] nonlinear interactions. Recently, second-order [chi(2)] nonlinearity was introduced into Si3N4 via the photogalvanic effect, ...

We demonstrate piezoelectric actuators monolithically integrated on ultralow-loss Si3N4 waveguides. Varying the voltage applied on the actuator allows tuning the microresonator, and is used to initiate, switch, stabilize and tightly phase lock the single s ...

This research tests the potential susceptibility of a prevalent, residential, wall assembly to the risk of sustained mold-growth in predicted future climate conditions. Here, the authors demonstrate a methodology that combines hygrothermal and mold-growth ...

We demonstrate a novel technique of contour-mode suppression of an integrated MEMS-photonic chip up to the first HBAR mode at 17 MHz. The flattened actuation response is critical to the development of compact LiDAR engine or low-noise frequency-agile laser ...

Arising from modulation instability, Turing rolls in optical Kerr microresonators have been used in the generation of optical frequency combs and the synthesis of microwave and terahertz frequencies. In this work, by applying electro-optic modulation on te ...
